The Clan of the Wolf Dog
This petroglyph of a wolf/dog can be seen on Google Earth around 1500 feet off the modern shoreline. It measures roughly 1400 sq ft X 1400 sq ft and is obviously man made. When was the last time this area was above sea level? It appears as though there were several islands separated by rivers outpouring into the Pacific Ocean at the time this was carved. The scale of the petroglyph is impressive as it is about the size of a football field! That took a lot of thought and a lot of work to create this...whatever it is!
Check it out for yourself at: 46*42'47.28"N 123*55'37.72"W on Google Earth. You can zoom in and see the finer details and markings on the face of the dog and see the actual feathers on the serpent...thats why I call it a feathered serpent. It is definitely man made and intentional...but WHAT it is...and WHAT it symbolized and was used for...has been lost to humanity under the waves due to this ancient sea level rise.

Dog or Wolf...you make the call!
Here is the petro-glyph area with shoreline for perspective. It appears the sacred wolf...or dog...has a feathered serpent in his mouth. I've seen this symbolism used in many ancient cultures. I wonder what religious/mystical symbol this glyph had for the society that created it? And what exactly is a "feathered" serpent? I wonder what life was like for the people who inhabited this antediluvian paradise? What stories were told around the fire to the children about this mysterious earth work? The climate was pleasant and the rivers and lakes supplied ample water for agriculture. The area teemed with fish, birds, and animals of all kinds...including mega-fauna like mammoth, giant beaver, giant bears, lions, dire wolves...and yes...the dreaded saber toothed tiger! I have noticed that with a lot of the neolithic sites we do find they are defensible. Many sites have the remains of large earthen works and wooden palisades surrounding their settlements which were usually built on hilltops...or easily defensible low land sites. For what reason? They built walls much larger later in human history but I wonder what the ancients were so afraid of? Other bands of human hunters or the mega-fauna they lived in such close proximity to. This petro-glyph could be a dog...especially since scientists now link the domestication of the dog with the advance of human civilization occurring around 50,000 years ago. It does makes sense that it is a dog...as dogs and humans make an almost unbeatable hunting combination. This team of man and dog quickly became the Alpha predator's on the planet! Both are extremely social animals and understand the "pack" mentality, can there be any doubt that the "missing link" in human history...and the reason we became so smart...is our friendship with the dog? Settlements and encampments became much more easily defended due to the dog's ever vigilant presence living among the human tribes. With safety and security of the clan achieved...with food more easily attainable...the fertile mind of man began to flourish with imagination and creativity! Better diets and access to larger amounts of animal protein...meat...gave our brains the nutrients to grow larger and sowed the seeds of language, culture, imagination, and all other human expressions we know. So we "modern" humans owe an awful lot to the dog...for as our scientists now say...without the dog there would be no civilization as we know it today! Perhaps the people of this paleolithic band understood that debt much more than we do today.
